Quote of the Week: "Keep away from people who try to
belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really
great ones make you feel that you too, can become great." ~ Mark Twain

2. Surgeon General Says Parents Must Model Responsible Drinking
U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu said that the fact that he didn't
drink alcohol until after age 21 had a lot to do with the good role
models provided by his parents.

3. SAMHSA Takes Snapshot of Teen Drug Use
On any given day, about 1.2 million American teens smoke, 631,000 drink
alcohol, and 586,000 use marijuana, says SAMHSA.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- Teens are turning away from street drugs and using prescription
drugs to get high. New users of prescription drugs have caught up
with new users of marijuana.
- Next to marijuana, the most common illegal drugs teens are using
to get high are prescription medications.
- Teens are abusing prescription drugs because they believe the
myth that these drugs provide a medically safe high.
- The majority of teens get prescription drugs easily and for
free, often from friends or relatives.
- Girls are more likely than boys to intentionally abuse
prescription drugs to get high.
- Pain relievers such as OxyContin and Vicodin are the most
commonly abused prescription drugs by teens.
- Adolescents are more likely than young adults to become
dependent on prescription medication.

5. For Employers
The cost of traffic-related crashes to employers is an estimated $55
billion each year in direct costs, lost time and workers' compensation.

6. Crack Users Do More Time Than People Convicted of
Manslaughter
When crack cocaine possession means 24 years in prison and manslaughter
means only 3, you know something is seriously wrong with the U.S.
criminal justice system

7. FREE: Creating Smoke-Free Recreational Areas
Here's a new tool from the Technical Assistance Legal Center - which is
based in California - and funded by the California Department of Health
Services. Increasingly, many California communities are interested in
limiting secondhand smoke exposure and tobacco use in areas such as
parks, playgrounds and sports fields. By addressing tobacco use
outdoors, an ordinance prohibiting smoking or all tobacco use in
recreational areas also helps limit tobacco-related litter.
