08/27/07                     Vol. 7  #35

Help us reach more kids.  Tape this  number 23978 over the bar code on your Bashas' card.  The next time you use your card the cashier will enter us as your charity and every time you shop until March 31, 2008 we will earn 1% up to $2,500.

We aim to bring you the latest information on drug abuse prevention for students, parents and professionals.  If you do not find this information useful or your name was entered on our list in error just follow the instructions at the bottom of the newsletter to be taken off this list.

If you have a list or an organization feel free to forward this newsletter in whole or any part or share the list with us and we will share the news with them.  It does no good until it gets read.

If you would like to help the kids in your community check out our web site at http://rundrugsoutoftownrun.org and consider
staging a Run Drugs Out of Town Run.

1.  Drug Experimentation Not Normal, RAND Studies Suggest

Kids who abstain from marijuana use are not emotionally or socially troubled, whereas those who use alcohol or other drugs while alone tend to suffer a range of psychosocial and behavioral problems.

2.  Is Smokeless Tobacco Safer than Cigarettes?

Think that going smokeless is safer than smoking? Better think again. Dippers may be exposed to more cancer-causing chemicals than a pack-a-day smoker. Not as "healthy" as you thought, eh? http://www.worthit.org/facts/moresmokeless.asp

3.  Fewer Parent-Teen Discussions About Drugs

A Partnership for a Drug-Free America survey finds that fewer parent-teen discussions about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs are taking place, a trend that PDFA described as 'alarming.'

4.  JUST THE FACTS:

In 2003 SAMHSA estimated 305,731 drug-related Emergency Department, ED visits involved alcohol or a major illicit drug; this is nearly half (49 percent) of all drug-related ED visits.

  • Cocaine was involved in 125,921 ED visits, or 20 percent of all drug-related ED visits.
  • Marijuana was involved in 79,663, or nearly 13 percent, of all drug-related ED visits.
  • Heroin was involved in 47,604, or nearly 8 percent, of all drug-related ED visits.
  • Stimulants, including amphetamines and methamphetamine, were involved in 42,538, or nearly 7 percent of all drug-related ED visits.
  • Unspecified opiates, some of which may be heroin, occurred in 24,623, or nearly 4 percent, of all drug-related ED visits.

5.  How & Why Philip Morris is Pushing for FDA Regulation

It may seem incongruous to the average person why Philip Morris (PM) would back legislation to restrict its business, yet that is what PM seems to be is doing by supporting S. 625, the "Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act."

6.  Antidepressants Now Most Prescribed Drugs

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antidepressants are now the most commonly prescribed drugs in the U.S., totaling 118 million prescriptions in 2005.
