Quote of the Week: "Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among
America’s
youth. More young people drink alcohol than smoke
tobacco
or use marijuana."

1. CADCA Broadcast to Discuss Teen Cough Medicine Abuse
Have you heard the term "skittling" or "Tussing?" Chances are, your
teenage son or daughter has. Recent research shows that while parents
are aware of the dangers of illicit street drugs, both prescription
medicine and over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicines are often overlooked
as a potential threat. This, despite the fact that an estimated one in
10 people, aged 12?17, or 2.4 million kids, have intentionally abused
cough medicine to get high.

2. Parents, You're Not Done Yet
"Parents, you're not done yet" is a program with materials in both
English and Spanish designed to encourage parents of incoming college
freshmen to discuss college drinking with their kids before they leave
home and during the first weeks of the school year.

Drinking Age (MLDA), which was signed into federal law 23 years ago.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- More than three out of every four students have had alcohol by
the end of high school. More than half of 12th-graders and a fifth
of 8th-graders have been drunk at least once.
- In recent surveys of high school students, 93 percent of
12th-graders and 64 percent of 8th-graders reported that alcohol is
“fairly” or “very” easy to get.
- Research has indicated that one typical way underage youth
procure alcohol is at parties where parents and other adults have
left them unsupervised.
- Sixty-five percent of underage youth who drink reported
obtaining alcohol from family and friends.
