1.  Do You Know What Is In a Cigarette?

Cigarettes are much more than tobacco rolled in paper. In fact, cigarette smoke includes more than 4,000 chemicals, including arsenic, formaldehyde, polonium 210, and at least 69 chemicals known to cause cancer.

To raise awareness about these and other hazardous chemicals in cigarettes, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has launched a new web site – www.whatareyousmoking.org.

2.  SAMHSA Report Finds Decline in Youth Substance Abuse

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released "State Estimates of Substance Use from the 2004–2005 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health." The report provides state estimates for 23 measures of substance use and mental health problems.

According to the report, the use of illicit drugs among youth age 12 to 17 declined from 10.9 percent in 2003-2004 to 10.3 percent in 2004-2005, while past month alcohol use decreased from 17.7 to 17.1 percent in the same period. http://oas.samhsa.gov/2k5state/toc.cfm.

3.  Are You Overdosing on Caffeine With Energy Drinks?

A review of records from a regional poison control center in Chicago found 265 cases of caffeine intoxication, including 31 hospitalizations and 20 ICU admissions. Most were sickened by caffeine taken in the form of dietary supplements, medications, or energy drinks.

4.  JUST THE FACTS:  Alcohol and Older Drinkers

  • Alcohol-related problems, including interactions with prescription and over-the counter drugs, account for most of the substance related problems experienced by older adults.
  • Heavy alcohol consumption is known to result in memory deficits. Heavy alcohol consumption also may increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease in both genders and in women in particular, as they appear to be more vulnerable than men to alcohol–induced brain damage.
  • Because of age-related body changes, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends that older drinkers consume no more than one drink a day.

5.  Nicotine Alters the Developing Rat Brain

Exposure to the drug during gestation or adolescence may cause lasting alterations in reward and motivation circuits.

6.  Prescription Drug Abuse Policy Brief

Almost 48 million Americans have used a prescription drug nonmedically at least once in their lifetimes. This policy brief looks at the nature of prescription drug abuse and approaches, including pharmaceutical company initiatives and state-based controls, needed to address the problem.
