2. Rich Kids More Likely Than Poor to Use Drugs
Rich kids from Alameda and Contra Costa counties in California were more
likely to use alcohol and other drugs than their peers from poor
communities, according to data from California's Healthy Kids Survey.

4. JUST THE FACTS: Harmful Effects of Alcohol
- Alcohol–related crashes (i.e., those in which a driver or
pedestrian had a blood alcohol concentration [BAC] greater than
zero) account for 41 percent of all fatal car accidents .
- Alcohol use contributes to a range of chronic health
consequences including cancer and cardiovascular disease.
- Alcohol use has been associated with increased risk of traumatic
injury including: motor vehicle crashes, bicycling accidents,
pedestrians, falls, fires, injuries in sports and recreational
activities, interpersonal violence, and self–inflicted injuries.
- The economic costs of alcohol abuse in the United States are
estimated to be approximately $185 billion annually.

5. Occasional Heavy Drinking Muddles Workplace Productivity
Two recent studies offer reviews of the behaviors and costs associated
with excessive drinking. Both studies find that because problem drinkers
outnumber alcoholics their drinking behaviors are more costly.

6. Drug Use Hits a New
Low Among American Workers
The latest report from Quest Diagnostics, the nation's largest workplace
drug testing company, shows that America's drug problem is getting
smaller. Quest is reporting that the number of employees testing
positive for drugs is at an 18-year low.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime launched an updated
multilingual dictionary of all drugs controlled under the United Nations
