Flooding Emergency Rooms
Visits to emergency rooms arising from nonmedical use of prescription
and over-the-counter drugs rose 21 percent between 2004 and 2005,
according to a new report from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

2. Cigarette Use Reaches New Low Among High School Seniors
The prevalence of cigarette use among U.S. public high school seniors
has reached the lowest point ever recorded, according to the most recent
data from the national Monitoring the Future survey.

A study that compared cigarette warning labels from four countries
concluded that those using pictorial images were more effective than
text-based health messages.

4. JUST THE FACTS: Who Has An Alcohol Problem?
- 25 percent of U.S. children are exposed to alcohol abuse or
dependence in the family.
- Between 2001 and 2002, the prevalence of alcohol abuse was
highest among Native Americans (5.75%) followed by Whites (5.10%),
Blacks (3.29%), Hispanics (3.9%), and Asians (2.13%).
- Alcohol abuse and dependence is more common among males than
females and decrease with aging.
- Between 2001 and 2002, 8.5 percent of adult Americans –17.6
million -- met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for either alcohol
dependence or alcohol abuse.
