4.  JUST THE FACTS:  Underage Alcohol Use and Impaired Driving

  • To reduce alcohol-related fatal crashes among youth, all States have adopted a minimum legal drinking age of 21.

  • The 21-year-old minimum drinking-age laws have saved an estimated 24,560 lives since 1975.

  • In 2005, an estimated 823 lives were saved by minimum drinking-age laws.

  • In 2005, during a 30-day period, 28.5 percent of students nationwide reported riding in a car or other vehicle one or more times with a driver who had been drinking alcohol.

  • In 2005, during a 30-day period, 9.9 percent of students nationwide drove a car or other vehicle one or more times after drinking alcohol. 12
