Quote of the Week: "Finish each day and be done with it.
You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept
in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall
begin it sesrenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your
old nonsense." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Inside the Teenage Brain
Raleigh Philp isn't a scientist himself; he's a longtime teacher and a
teacher trainer at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education
and Psychology. But he also thinks of himself as a translator, someone
who can use current brain research to help teachers teach. His new book,
Engaging 'Tweens and Teens: A Brain-Compatible Approach to Reaching
Middle and High School Students, aims to show teachers how to cope with
the developing -- and often baffling -- teenage brain.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- Girls are now drinking at the same rate as boys.
Teen girls who binge drink are up to 63% more likely to become teen
mothers.
- Most kids who drink do so to get drunk. More than 90% of the
alcohol consumed by 12-20 year olds is drunk when they are binge
drinking (consuming 5 or more drinks in a single drinking episode).
- 95% of all violent crime on college campuses and 90% of
acquaintance rapes involve the use of alcohol by the assailant,
victim or both.
- Underage drinking costs the United States $53 billion a year in
medical care, lost productivity, and the pain and suffering of young
drinkers.
