1. When Don’t Smoke Means Do
Philip Morris has adopted the role of good citizen these days. Its Web
site brims with information on the dangers of smoking, and it has
mounted a campaign of television spots that urge parents, oh so
earnestly, to warn their children against smoking.

3. Silence Isn't
Golden; It's Permission
No loving relationship can exist without good communication. Teens
believe they have valuable things to say, and when a parent genuinely
listens, it helps self-esteem and confidence. It will take more than
five
minutes to talk to your teen about drugs and alcohol - it's about
building an ongoing dialogue.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- In view of the continuing and mounting evidence from many
sources, it is the judgment of the Committee that cigarette smoking
contributes substantially to mortality from certain specific
diseases and to the overall death rate.
- Cigarette smoking is causally related to lung cancer in men; the
magnitude of
the effect of cigarette smoking far outweighs all other factors.
- Cigarette smoking is the most important of the causes of chronic
bronchitis in the United States, and increases the risk of dying
from chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
- It is established that male cigarette smokers have a higher
death rate from coronary artery disease than non-smoking males.
Although the causative role of cigarette smoking in deaths from
coronary disease is not proven.
- Pipe smoking appears to be causally related to lip cancer.
Cigarette smoking is a significant factor in the causation of cancer
of the larynx.

5. Cost of Alcohol-Related Crimes Higher Than Drug-Related
Crime
Drug use is often associated with crime, but the costs of crimes that
can be attributed to alcohol are twice the costs that can be attributed
to drugs, according to a study published in the December issue of
Prevention Science, a peer reviewed publication of the Society for
Prevention Research (SPR).

6. Many Drivers Test Positive for Illicit Drugs
A new study finds that one-third of all drivers pulled over for
suspicion of impaired driving tested positive for illicit drugs even
though they were under the legal limit for driving with alcohol in their
systems.
