3.
Research commissioned by The Century Council reveals that 65% of
underage youth who drink obtain alcohol from family and friends. Equally
important, only 7% of youth report that they obtained alcohol from
retailers who failed to check for identification.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- Nearly all first use of tobacco occurs before high school
graduation; this finding suggests that if adolescents can be kept
tobacco-free, most will never start using tobacco.
- Most adolescent smokers are addicted to nicotine and report that
they want to quit but are unable to do so; they experience relapse
rates and withdrawal symptoms similar to those reported by adults.
- Tobacco is often the first drug used by those young people who
use alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.
- Cigarette advertising appears to increase young people's risk of
smoking by
affecting their perceptions of the pervasiveness, image, and
function of
smoking.
- Community wide efforts that include tobacco tax increases,
enforcement of minors' access laws, youth-oriented mass media
campaigns, and school-based tobacco-use prevention programs are
successful in reducing adolescent use of
tobacco.

5. How Do We Win the War On Drugs?
Jack Cole looks like a middle-aged tourist – and last week he was
visiting art galleries in Florence. Yesterday, however, he was on some
of Glasgow's meaner streets with a Strathclyde police officer and a
camera crew. When he takes off his jacket, his T-shirt reveals in eye-catchingly
large letters the slogan: "Cops say legalise drugs. Ask me why."

6. Italian Smoking Ban Prevents Heart Attacks
Hospital admissions for heart attacks among people under age 60 fell 11
percent in Italy's Piedmont region after the Italian government imposed
a ban on indoor smoking, researchers from the University of Turin said.
