1. Exposure to Tobacco
Marketing More Than Doubles the Odds of Children Smoking
Exposure to tobacco advertising and favorable tobacco depictions in
films, television and videos more than doubles the odds that children
under 18 will become tobacco users, according to a new study to be
published in the December 2006 issue of the peer-reviewed Archives of
Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

2. Researchers See Growing Youth Abuse of Caffeine
Nausea, vomiting, racing heartbeat, hallucinations, panic attacks, and
chest pains are among the possible effects of taking too much caffeine,
which has landed increasing numbers of young people in hospital
emergency rooms.

3. Disclosure of Advertising Tactics Reduces Odds Kids Will
Drink
A new research report from Penn State's Smeal College of Business finds
that modest in-school lessons revealing the goals and effects of alcohol
advertising can reduce the likelihood that adolescents will drink.

- IN THE UNITED STATES, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT EACH YEAR AS MUCH AS
$7.8 BILLION IS SPENT TO HELP THOSE WITH FAS
- ALCOHOL CAN DAMAGE THE BABY AT ANY STAGE OF ITS DEVELOPMENT.
- SOME OF THE SERIOUS BIRTH DEFECTS THAT ARE CAUSED BY ALCOHOL MAY
OCCUR IF THE MOTHER ABUSES ALCOHOL EVEN BEFORE SHE MIGHT REALIZE
THAT SHE IS PREGNANT.
- THE PROBABILITY OF HAVING A CHILD WITH FAS INCREASES WITH THE
AMOUNT AND FREQUENCY OF ALCOHOL CONSUMED.
- ALCOHOL KILLS SPECIFIC CELLS IN THE DEVELOPING BRAIN. THE
PATTERN OF CELL DEATH AND SUBSEQUENT DEFECTS VARY WITH THE STAGE OF
DEVELOPMENT AT THE TIME OF ALCOHOL EXPOSURE.
- THERE IS NO KNOWN SAFE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL THAT A PREGNANT WOMAN
CAN DRINK WITHOUT RISKING DAMAGE TO HER UNBORN BABY.
- ALCOHOL-RELATED BIRTH DEFECTS ARE 100% PREVENTABLE IF A PREGNANT
WOMAN DOES NOT DRINK ALCOHOL.

6. NIDA Develops New Resource to Fight Prescription Drug Abuse
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has developed a Community
Drug Alert Bulletin that addresses the latest scientific research on the
non-medical use of prescription drugs of abuse and addiction. The
bulletin summarizes the emerging problem in our country and the
disturbing trend of non-medical use of prescription drugs and can be a
useful tool for communities trying to prevent and reduce prescription
drug abuse among youth.
