1. The Surgeon General's
Report for Kids about Smoking
Welcome to SGR4KIDS, your online smoke-free magazine. We asked kids
across the country, "What do you and your friends think about smoking,
and what do you want to see in this magazine?" You will find their words
and ideas in SGR4KIDS. Read on!

3. When You Are Pregnant, Drinking Alcohol Can Hurt Your Baby
When you are pregnant, your baby grows inside you. Everything you eat
and drink while you are pregnant affects your baby. If you drink
alcohol, it can hurt your baby’s growth. Your baby may have problems
that can last for the rest of his or her life.

4. JUST THE FACTS: Secondhand Smoke & Children
- In the U.S., 43 percent of children are exposed to second-hand
smoke in their own homes and 85 percent of children have detectable
levels of cotinine in their blood.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the severity and
frequency of asthma episodes; 200,000 to 1,000,000 asthmatic
children with asthma have experienced aggravated symptoms.
- A California EPA study estimated 1,900 to 2,700 sudden infant
death syndrome (SIDS) deaths annually associated with secondhand
smoke exposure.
- Nicotine has been found in the blood of infants living in a home
with even light smokers.

5. Single Cigarette
Causes Heart Dysfunction
A cardiac imaging study at the University of Arizona reveals that any
amount of smoking can be dangerous. "What we found is that with just one
puff of a cigarette, we see changes in the way the heart relaxes between
contractions. It seems to stiffen -- it does not have the vigorous
motion it should have," said researcher Vincent Sorrell of the
University of Arizona. "And we know that failure to relax properly is an
early marker for heart failure."
