1. Anti-drug overdose?
Many school prevention programs don't help, scientists say, and may even
do harm

2. Threat Behind the
Party Girl Image
Young women are drinking harder alcohol -- and more of it -- at an
earlier age. Now studies show it takes a greater physical toll on them
than on men. They're much more likely than boys or young men to
experience physical and sexual assault while intoxicated.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- Every day, approximately 4,700 American youths ages 12-17 try
marijuana for the first time.
- By the time they reach 8th grade, nearly half of all teens have
had at least one drink of alcohol. More than 20 percent say they
have been “drunk.”
- More teens are in treatment for a primary diagnosis of marijuana
dependency than for all other illicit drugs combined.
- As many as 1.1 million young people ages 12-17 have taken a
performance-enhancing drug or sport supplement. Many sports
supplements are easily available to teens at stores, on the Internet
and from other sources.
- Anabolic steroids, typically available only by prescription,
were used by 2.1 percent of 12th graders surveyed in 2003.

5. Smoking Can Blind
You
Cigarette packets should carry warnings that smoking causes blindness,
doctors will argue this week as a new study shows that the habit can
badly damage eyesight.
A European study is set to show the leading cause of blindness -
age-related macular degeneration - is directly attributable to smoking
in more than one in four cases. In addition, clouding of the eye lens
occurs in smokers 10 to 15 years earlier than in non-smokers.

6. FAVOR Unveils Strategy for
Recovery 'Messaging'
Recovery, not "addiction," should be the focus of discussions between
people with alcohol and other drug problems and the media, lawmakers,
and the public, according to
Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR).
