1. Quit Tools
Quitting smoking isn't easy, but it can be done! Use these quit tools
to help make the process go a little smoother. The goal: stop smoking!
How you get there is totally up to you. You can choose to go without
help, coping skills, or support and pretend to tough it out, but you'd
feel a lot better having a plan to follow. And your chances of quitting
and staying smoke-free will definitely improve! Don't take my word for
it; just ask someone who has quit smoking.

2. All About ASCENT
ASCENT is a comprehensive stop smoking program for teens. It's
school-based, fun, and effective. The six-session curriculum is based on
research and the Stages of Change model. This model demonstrates a
teen's progression to ending tobacco use. The goal is to motivate teens
to move into Stage 3 (getting ready to quit) and hopefully to quit by
the end of the program. Identifying which stage participants are in will
be repeated each week and will demonstrate the group's progression
through the Stages to Quit Smoking.

3. Many Parents Still Smoke at Home, with Kids
Public-smoking bans may cut down on secondhand smoke at restaurants and
other workplaces, but many children are still exposed to smoking at
home, according to researchers from Mississippi State University.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
The consequences of alcohol use affect everyone—even those who drink
rarely or not at all.
• There is a strong association between alcohol consumption and physical
assault; communities that have a higher density of liquor stores and
bars experience more violent assaults.
• Every year in the U.S., approximately 40 percent of fatal traffic
crashes involve alcohol. Estimates from 2000 show that the societal
costs of driving under the influence come to $1 per drink, with people
other than the drinking driver paying 60 percent of those costs.
• Alcohol costs the U.S. economy an estimated $134 billion per year in
lost productivity and earnings due to alcohol-related illness, premature
death, and crime.
• Less than half of the economic burden of alcohol abuse falls on those
who drink alcohol—government bears nearly 40 percent of the burden, with
private insurance and victims also losing billions of dollars.

5. $7 Gain for Every $1 Spent on Treatment
A recent study concludes that society earns $7 in benefits for every $1
spent on addiction treatment, including savings on medical care,
mental-health services, and welfare payments, increased employment, and
reductions in criminal activity.

6. Misuse of
Pharmaceuticals Sends Half Million to ER Each Year
A new federal study shows that more emergency-room visits are caused by
misuse of pharmaceuticals -- including over-the-counter and prescription
drugs -- than by cocaine, marijuana, or other illicit drugs.
