2. Underage Drinking
Alcohol is the drug of choice among youth. Many young people are
experiencing the consequences of drinking too much, at too early an age.
As a result, underage drinking is a leading public health problem in
this country.
Each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die
as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from
motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide,
as well as hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and
drownings.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- In 1998, the estimated productivity loss for workers with past
or current alcoholism was $86.4 billion. Productivity losses were
greatest for males who initiated drinking before age 15.
- In a survey of 18- to 24-year-old current drinkers who failed to
complete high school, nearly 60% had begun to drink before age 16.
- Long-term heavy alcohol use is the leading cause of illness and
death from liver disease in the U.S.
- Alcohol is implicated in more than 100,000 deaths annually.
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates
that the laws specifying 21 as the minimum drinking age have saved
22,798 lives since the mid-1970s.10

5. Medical Marijuana 3000 Mile Bike Ride
Ken Locke, of North Carolina will be riding his bicycle across the
United States this April to bring attention to the war on medical
marijuana. Ken became a medical marijuana patient in 2001, when a limb
of a tree struck him on the head, shattering a section of his skull.
Since then, Ken has been working tirelessly to change local and national
laws against medical marijuana.
His bike ride will begin on April 7th, 2006 in South Carolina, and
will end in the Bay Area of California. This will be a massive 3000+
mile effort to bring more attention to the bad laws that destroy so many
lives.
Ken's trip will be the 7th Journey for Justice, following others who
have marched to end unfair practices in the drug war and criminal
justice system.

Study Supports 'Rewired'
Brain Theory of Addiction
Researchers say that a new study demonstrating differing biochemical
responses to cocaine among addicted rats supports the theory that
the brains of addicts become predisposed to craving.
David Self and colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center found that the dopamine system in the brains of rats
that strongly crave cocaine reacts differently that that in rats
which are less addicted to the drug.
