1. New Anti-drug Program Shows 'Phenomenal' Success By Focusing On
Positives
A newly-released study suggests that a well-designed in-school and
community communication campaign really can dramatically cut marijuana
and alcohol use among young teens [Ohio State University, USA]

2. Alcopops & Girls
A third of all girls older than 12 have tried a popular new alcoholic
beverage. Known as “girlie drinks” or “alcopops,” their sweet fruity
flavor can’t conceal the negative health consequences. Companies market
these “starter drinks” to appeal to girls and young women. Don’t be
taken in.

4. JUST THE FACTS:
- Those who begin drinking at age 14 or younger are significantly
more likely to experience unintentional injuries, physical fights,
and motor vehicle crashes after drinking.
- Among high school students who reported riding with a driver who
had been drinking, 80% were frequent drinkers and only 14% never
drank.
- Among 12- to 17-year-old current drinkers, 31% had extreme
levels of psychological distress, and 39% exhibited serious
behavioral problems.
- In 2000, youths ages 12 to 17 who reported past-year alcohol use
(19.6%) were more than twice as likely as youths who did not (8.6%)
to be at risk for suicide during this time period.
- Girls ages 12 to 16 who are current drinkers are four times more
likely than their nondrinking peers to suffer from depression.
- In 2003, 1.5 million youth ages 12 to 17 needed treatment for an
alcohol problem. Of this group, only 95,000 (6.3%) of them received
any treatment at a specialty facility, leaving an estimated 1.4
million youths who needed but did not receive treatment.
- Of all children under age 15 killed in vehicle crashes in 2003,
21% were killed in alcohol-related crashes.9

5. When the Cure May Make You Sicker
Of the 50 top-selling prescription drugs, only four are ''safe,''
says Thomas J. Moore, a medical writer and senior fellow in health
policy at George Washington University Medical Center. Numerous others,
he claims, can cause addiction, cancer, or heart problems. And the
number of Americans killed by pharmaceuticals is quadruple the number of
people who are murdered and double the number who die in car crashes.
Moore says at least a million each year are ''severely injured'' by
their medications. An additional 2 million are harmed by drugs
administered during hospital stays.
