1.  Add Your Memorial Photos

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is building a photo memorial to honor your loved ones who lost their lives to tobacco use. This memorial will be shared at events across the country to raise awareness about the deadly, and very human, toll of tobacco.

If you've lost a loved one to tobacco, please send a photo with the person's first name and state where they lived. You can send your photo(s) one of two ways:

Email it to us at tobaccofreekids@tobaccofreekids.org. Please put "Photo Memorial" in the subject line.

Send it to us in the mail at:
Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids
Attn: Photo Memorial

Suite 1200

2.  The Importance of Optimism

Why should you want your child to be an optimist? Because, as Dr. Martin Seligman explains: “Pessimism (the opposite of optimism) is an entrenched habit of mind that has sweeping and disastrous consequences: depressed mood, resignation, underachievement and even unexpectedly poor physical health.”

Children with optimistic thinking skills are better able to interpret failure, have a stronger sense of personal mastery and are better able to bounce back when things go wrong in their lives.

Because parents are a major contributor to the thinking styles of their children’s developing minds, it is important to adhere to the following five steps to ensure healthy mental habits in your children.

3.  You Call The Plays

Research shows that parents are central to preventing teen drug use. In fact, teenagers themselves say that losing their parents’ respect and trust are major reasons why they don’t use drugs. Parents are the first line of defense when it comes to teens’ drug use and drinking.

In a recent national survey, parents rated the use of performance-enhancing supplements and drugs and their No. 1 concern in youth sports. Yet, 81 percent of the young people surveyed said they had never had a conversation with their parents about the substances, and 69 percent said they had not received information from their sports teams.

4.  JUST THE FACTS:

  • Research indicates that adolescents who abuse alcohol may remember 10% less of what they have learned than those who don't drink.1
  • Among eighth-graders, students with higher grade point averages reported less alcohol use in the past month.
  • Among eighth-graders, higher truancy rates were associated with greater rates of alcohol use in the past month.
  • High school students who use alcohol or other drugs frequently are up to five times more likely than other students to drop out of school.
  • Evidence suggests that alcohol use by peers is a strong predictor of adolescent use of alcohol.
  • One national study found that students are less likely to use alcohol if they are socially accepted by people at school, and feel that teachers treat students fairly.
  • According to a 1995 national survey of fourth-through sixth-graders who read the Weekly Reader, more than half (54%) reported learning about the dangers of illicit drugs at school, but fewer than a third (30%) learned about the dangers of drinking and smoking at school.
