1. Add Your Memorial Photos Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is building a photo memorial to honor your loved ones who lost their lives to tobacco use. This memorial will be shared at events across the country to raise awareness about the deadly, and very human, toll of tobacco. If you've lost a loved one to tobacco, please send a photo with the person's first name and state where they lived. You can send your photo(s) one of two ways: Email it to us at tobaccofreekids@tobaccofreekids.org. Please put "Photo Memorial" in the subject line. Send it to us in the mail at: 2. The Importance of Optimism Why should you want your child to be an optimist? Because, as Dr. Martin Seligman explains: “Pessimism (the opposite of optimism) is an entrenched habit of mind that has sweeping and disastrous consequences: depressed mood, resignation, underachievement and even unexpectedly poor physical health.” Children with optimistic thinking skills are better able to interpret failure, have a stronger sense of personal mastery and are better able to bounce back when things go wrong in their lives. Because parents are a major contributor to the thinking styles of their
children’s developing minds, it is important to adhere to the following five
steps to ensure healthy mental habits in your children. 3. You Call The Plays Research shows that parents are central to preventing teen drug use. In fact, teenagers themselves say that losing their parents’ respect and trust are major reasons why they don’t use drugs. Parents are the first line of defense when it comes to teens’ drug use and drinking. In a recent national survey, parents rated the use of performance-enhancing
supplements and drugs and their No. 1 concern in youth sports. Yet, 81 percent
of the young people surveyed said they had never had a conversation with their
parents about the substances, and 69 percent said they had not received
information from their sports teams. 4. JUST THE FACTS:
******************************* 5. Fifteen Percent of U.S. Workers Report Workplace Alcohol Use or Impairment in Past Year An estimated 19.2 million U.S. workers report using or being impaired by
alcohol at work at least once in the past year. 6. More Employers Charging Smokers Extra for Health Insurance Surcharges of $20 to $50 per month are becoming more common for smokers who
are covered by employer-paid health insurance. 7. FREE: Words Poster This POSTER features a labyrinth of sentences warning of the risks of
marijuana. A special thanks to Join Together Online, Tobacco Free Kids, Alcohol Free Kids, Daily Dose, The AntiDrug, CesarFax and SAMSHA for bringing some of this information to us.
