1.  Alcohol Is the #1 Drug of Choice for Children and Adolescents
 

• Before the age of 18, approximately one in four children is exposed to family alcoholism or addiction, or alcohol abuse.
• Children of alcoholics are significantly more likely to initiate drinking during adolescence and to develop alcohol use disorders.
• Parents' drinking behaviors and favorable attitudes about drinking have been associated with adolescents' initiating and continuing drinking.
• Research studies indicate that children are less likely to drink when their parents are involved with them and when they and their parents report feeling close to each other.
• Adolescents drink less and have fewer alcohol-related problems when their parents discipline them consistently and set clear expectations.
• Any drinking during pregnancy presents a risk to the fetus.
• Older siblings' alcohol use can influence the alcohol use of younger siblings in the family, particularly for same sex siblings.

2.  Parents' Anti-Drug Talk Called Effective

Parents who are intolerant of drug use and let their children know it are less likely to have kids who use drugs, according to researchers at Brigham Young University.

3.  Ads Chide Parents On Youth Alcohol Use

Message is: Teens drink to get drunk

The front line is shifting in the battle against underage drinking. In October, the Office of National Drug Control Policy began airing television commercials that chide parents for knowingly or unwittingly contributing to underage drinking.

''Young people drink to get drunk," states one of the ads running in Marin County. ''Stop kidding yourself. Don't give alcohol to teens."

4.  JUST THE FACTS:

The alcohol industry targets youth with marketing messages to develop loyal customers.

• Youth are more likely to see alcohol advertising on TV than ads for products such as juice, gum, chips, sneakers, or jeans.
• Anheuser-Busch ranks number one among all companies in producing kid-friendly advertisements. A study of children ages nine to 11 found they were more familiar with Budweiser's frogs than with Kellog's Tony the Tiger, the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, or Smokey Bear.
• Awareness of beer advertising among youth has been shown to predict more positive views of drinking and increased intentions to drink as an adult.
• Youth who own alcohol brand promotional items—such as T-shirts and baseball caps—are more than 1.5 times more likely to use alcohol than youth who do not.
• Despite the alcohol industry's self-imposed regulation banning advertising in media whose youth audience is more than 30 percent, 25 alcohol brands spent millions of dollars in 2004 on ads that violated this 30 percent cap.

6.  New Drug Acts As Marijuana In the Brain

A McGill University study suggests a new anti-depressant drug works by raising levels of endocannabinoids -- similar to a substance found in marijuana.
The study suggests the new drug, called URB597, might represent a safer alternative to use of marijuana for treatment of pain and depression, and open the door to new and improved treatments for clinical depression.
In pre-clinical laboratory tests researchers found URB597 increased the production of endocannabinoids by blocking their degradation, resulting in measurable antidepressant effects.
