Quote of the Week:
"We are in danger of becoming a nation of pill poppers, the increase in
the abuse of prescription drugs has been fueled worldwide by
misperceptions of the potential harms of these powerful drugs, making it
more critical than ever that we raise public awareness about the dangers
of their misuse." ~ drug czar John Walters

4. JUST THE FACTS: Smokeless Tocacco
- The scientific evidence is strong that the use of snuff can cause
cancer in
humans. The evidence for causality is strongest for cancer of the oral
cavity,
wherein cancer may occur several times more frequently in snuff dippers
compared to nontobacco users. The excess risk of cancer of the cheek and
gum
may reach nearly fiftyfold among long-term snuff users.” p. vii.
- “Gingival recession is a commonly reported outcome of smokeless
tobacco use.”
p. vi.
- “Since nicotine levels in the body resulting from smokeless tobacco
use are
similar in magnitude to nicotine levels from cigarette smoking, it is
concluded
that smokeless tobacco use also can be addictive.” p. vi.
- “Some evidence suggests that nicotine may play a contributory or
supportive
role in the pathogenesis of coronary artery and peripheral vascular
disease,
hypertension, peptic ulcers, and fetal mortality and morbidity.” p. vi.

5.
Minorities More Likely to Be Screened for Alcohol Use
Hispanics and African-Americans rarely
get superior healthcare compared to white Americans, but a new
report finds one exception: primary-care physicians may be more
willing to query minorities about their alcohol use than to counsel
white patients,

6. More Drinking Leads to More Sick Leave
Research in Sweden demonstrates that increased per capita alcohol
consumption is associated with increased workplace absenteeism. The
study provides convincing evidence that employers should be concerned
about excessive alcohol consumption -- even when employees drink outside
of the workplace.

7. FREE: Report Sheds Light on Teen Prescription Drug
Abuse
The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has published "Teens
and Prescription Drugs: An Analysis of Recent Trends on the Emerging
Drug Threat."
Recent studies and reports indicate that the intentional abuse by
adolescents of such prescription drugs as pain relievers, tranquilizers,
stimulants, and sedatives is a growing concern. The ONDCP report
examines this emerging threat, which has seen the number of new abusers
of prescription drugs, age 12–17, match the figure for marijuana.
