How to Do It

We want your event to be a success which is why we have tried to make it as simple as possible.  What follows is a list of what you will need to do and while there may be some overlap in the sequence of when to do them, it is a good outline to work with.   You can print this page and use it as a check list as you work through the process.

Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon and many other recovery programs are based on The 12 Steps.  Here are 12 steps that will help prevent a lot of kids in your area from ever needing recovery.

1.  Make a commitment:  This is of course the only place to start.  If you believe drug abuse prevention is an important enough issue and message than you should have no problem here.

2.  Set a Date & Time:  This is the ultimate goal and the other steps are the sub goals along the way.

3.  Get the Track:  Your high school or college will have a quarter mile track but you need to schedule it well in advance.

4. Get Volunteers: You can never have too much help!

5.  Add Entertainment: The more fun things you have at your event the more people you will attract

6.  Tell everyone:  As important as this issue may be for you and the children you will invite to run it is also important to the businesses and professionals in your area.  Some will be able to contribute a large enough sum to get their name on the back of the T-shirts, others may give enough to sponsor a runner.

7.  Get Literature:  You can literally have a ton of free literature to pass out to runners and their parents and the most it will cost you is the cost of a fax.

8.  Get applications:  You will also need to set your price.

9.  Invite Runners:  Who you invite depends upon the distance you will be running and the people you most want to reach.

10.  Order Shirts and Medals: They do take time to print and deliver.

11.  Be insured:  Better safe than sorry.

12.  Be prepared:  This is the true test.
